9 Foods That Relieve Hypotension

Since hypotension can give us dizziness and other unpleasant symptoms, it is advisable to consume those foods that help us maintain stable blood pressure.

Hypotension is a condition in which blood pressure is abnormally low  and its most common symptoms are dizziness or dizziness, according to information obtained from the Mayo Clinic.

The episode can last from a few seconds to a couple of minutes.

Hypotension or its sensation can be the alarm sign of a rather serious condition, it can be present in episodes of bleeding, critical states of the organism, hypoglycemic processes that can occur with hypotension, for this reason medical treatment is suggested in these cases.

In this article we tell you what foods can help you when you are suffering from low blood pressure.

What is and why hypotension occurs

Hypotency

Blood pressure or blood pressure is the pressure that blood exerts on the walls of blood vessels. When we speak of hypotension, we refer to a deficient or lower tension than normal (depending on the age or gender of the person).

When the pressure is low, not enough blood reaches the vital organs.

The main causes are:

  • Consume some types of antidepressants, as stated in this study by Dr. Andrés Heerlein.
  • Being dehydrated
  • According to this study carried out by the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, having diabetes.
  • Taking diuretics or heart medications.
  • Having heart failure According to this study by the American Heart Center, it is one of the main symptoms.
  • Go through eating disorders. This is stated in this study carried out by the Universidad del Desarrollo de Chile.
  • Suddenly changing body position (for example, when getting out of bed).

The most common symptoms of hypotension are:

  • Dizziness, blurred vision, vertigo.
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pallor.
  • Chest pain
  • Fainting.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Headache.
  • Numbness in legs or hands.
  • Feeling of instability
  • Cervical stiffness

If you are experiencing a drop in blood pressure and experience at least one of the above symptoms, it would be good if, as a first step, you sit in a quiet place and breathe normally.

A good idea to regulate pressure and reduce discomfort is to consume certain foods or drinks:

Water

If the reason for hypotension is dehydration or heat stroke, then the most effective remedy is to drink water. According to this study carried out by the Spanish Society of Basic and Applied Nutrition, hydration is a key factor to carry out all our functions.

Start slowly with a few sips, and as you feel better, take more. Do not forget that every day we must drink two liters of water to prevent it from missing in our body and causing various symptoms.

Chocolate?

Bitter chocolate

It is believed that chocolate could increase the tension thanks to its theobromine content. However, it is not recommended, since current studies still consider these supposed benefits to be irrelevant; in the same way, this research carried out by the Institute of Science and Technology of Food and Nutrition (Spain), emphasizes its hypotensive nature and leaves the door open to future research on the aforementioned theobromine.

We recommend that you choose those with more cocoa than fat or milk. They are healthier!

Electrolyte drinks

The well-known “sports drinks” are recommended for people with low blood pressure, as they provide minerals such as sodium, magnesium and potassium.

If drinking mineral water doesn’t completely improve symptoms, try these isotonic drinks. However, the Spanish Heart Foundation recommends in this report caution and, if possible, the non-use of these drinks in a normal way in people who do not play sports or have suffered any type of severe low blood pressure.

Cheeses

The cheese

Because they contain salt, eating a cube of queso fresco is a great idea when your blood pressure drops.

You can also have a turkey sandwich, an olive or a pickle with vinegar.

The sodium in these foods is enough to avoid hypotension, but you should not exaggerate with salt intakes since it can “trigger” your pressure and be dangerous to your health, according to this study carried out by the Las Condes Clinic (Chile) .

Coffee or tea

As with salt, it is good to consume caffeine or theine in small amounts if our blood pressure is low. One cup of either option is sufficient.

Do not abuse their intake either, as they can cause tachycardia. This research from the Alcorcón Hospital (Madrid) recommends it only for specific cases of sudden hypotension.

Licorice

Licorice

It is a more than interesting option to avoid new episodes of hypotension. Licorice maintains regulated pressure and can be consumed both in infusions and in desserts.

If, for example, it’s very hot in the summer, drink a cup of licorice tea for breakfast to prevent a drop in pressure. However, be careful, since, according to this study carried out by the Terrassa Hospital (Barcelona), it can contribute to the development of hypertension.

Nuts

Due to their contribution of vitamin B, they have the ability to balance pressure and avoid not only hypotension, but also hypertension. Vitamin B3, according to this study by the John M. Eisenberg Center for Clinical Decisions and Communications Science (United States), is highly recommended.

You can always have a small bag with almonds, raisins, walnuts and hazelnuts to consume if you start to feel bad.

Other foods that offer this vitamin are legumes and cereals.

Rosemary

Rosemary infusion

It is very useful to have a pot with a rosemary plant in the kitchen and use it in hundreds of recipes (especially those that contain meat).

Rosemary maintains blood pressure levels and therefore we also recommend it in tea form when symptoms begin. This is supported by this study carried out by the Universidade Estadual Paulista (Brazil).

Fruits with vitamin C?

Although all fruits are believed to be good for preventing dehydration or alleviating symptoms of hypotension, there is one group that stands out above the rest: citrus.

However, there is no scientific evidence to support that citrus fruits contribute to raising blood pressure.

What to do if my blood pressure drops?

In addition to consuming any of the foods and beverages mentioned, in these cases it would be good to pay attention to these indications :

  • Lie down with your legs elevated or sit with your head between your legs.
  • Open the windows and breathe fresh air.
  • Drink a glass of water.
  • Have a snack or candy.
  • Stop doing your activities to avoid fainting or falling.
  • If symptoms don’t subside, call 911.

Here we have offered you some indications so that you can identify the symptoms and find some relief with our advice if you suffer from any of them. However, both hypertension and hypotension are conditions that have to be controlled by specialists.

We hope this article has been helpful to you!
